First United Methodist Church
Long-Range Maintenance Projects

Our present church is the third Methodist church built on the existing site. The first, built in 1889 was damaged by fire in 1917 only to be rebuilt and severely damaged by the 1925 earthquake. Finally, in December 1927, our present church was dedicated. Designed in the Spanish-Renaissance style of post-earthquake Santa Barbara, it was built of sturdy concrete construction which has survived subsequent earthquakes and has not required seismic retrofitting.

However sturdy the existing construction was, the church is an aging facility that requires costly repairs and maintenance in order to maintain its stately appearance and to provide a safe, clean and adequate place for worship, programs and ministries.

Recently the church has undertaken complete tenting for control of termite infestation, replaced major components of the aging church furnace, and re-roofed the tile section of the church, reusing some of the existing tile when possible. These were all costly projects and were funded mainly from endowment funds and rental income from church properties. As such, the endowment funds were depleted.

A number of large facility maintenance projects are on the horizon as listed below. This information is provided to the congregation to apprise all of the upcoming financial commitments that must be made for the continued upkeep and maintenance of our beloved church. Gifts to be realized over the next years will ensure a fiscal base to make completion of the projects possible. If you would like specifics as the estimated costs of these projects, please contact the Chair of Trustees through the Church office (805) 963-3579.
