01/18/2008: "The Season of Lent"

Come, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
To whom we for our children cry.
Unite the pair so long disjoined,
Knowledge and vital piety.
a hymn by Charles Wesley

How can we know God?

How do you intertwine your knowledge about God with your personal sense of spirituality?

How can you relate the ideas, words, concepts, and traditions you have about God  with your sense of wonder, your focus, your energy, your quiet  meditations, your prayers…

Picture yourself sailing to the Channel Islands. Would you be able to sail if you never let the boat touch the water? If the two—the boat and the water—are split you never get to sail. When you sail, the boat and the water are one.

And so it is for people faith. Picture yourself as you follow Jesus. Would you be able to follow if you never let your Christian knowledge touch your spirituality? When you follow Jesus, your head and heart are one.

May you enter into the season of Lent (February 6–March 22) seeking and finding a greater connection between your knowledge and your piety—between you and God.
